DREAMLAND:
THE MIMPI MANIS OF GOES WINDY
Everything you can imagine is real.Take all the thousands of paintings of empty waves we see around the surf tourist centers of Indonesia.
Those dreamy, offshore fantasy waves fashioned after real photos torn form the pages of mouldering surf magazines.
Like naked women in playboy magazine ,these paintings .
Always nude, empty, just waiting for us whether coy or bold.
Lovely, often garish, but always depicting the very real in a very unreal way.
After all, the purpose of art is to wash the dust of daily life off our souls.
Of course, there is always someone who is the best at any genre.
Picasso for abstract,Dali for surrealism,Monet for impressionism,Rockwell for realism,Hopper for the cosmic.
And here too are we have our best at these empty wave paintings.
Form a small, paint-stained studio near, of all places,Dreamland.
How fitting, seeing as Goes Windy's paintings are produced from a sort of dream factory.
Quiet ,unassuming, he paints right next to the road as the blasting sound of traffic on its way up into the Bucket resonates though his cement walled gallery.
But once inside this small space ,any real surfer hears nothing but the roar of the ocean.
Countless memories. Sensory overloads.Mind-surfing each and every painting, not able to look away ir look at just one more.
Because Goes Windy knows that the aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.
Enabling us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.
One eye seeing, the other feeling.
In art as in love, instinct is enough.
So...is this great art?Does it deserve to dwell in the hearts of a world outside ours?
Does it need to hang in the great museums and galleries of the world?
Hell yes, it does.Because Goes Windy knows that which we all know every time we take off on a wave.
Every time we imagine taking off on a wave.
Every time we dream of any wave.
And that is this : That the essence of all beautiful art , all great art, is gratitude.
